EK WILAI, also referred to as Ek Vilai, has an intriguing history worth noting. This yellow-green cultivar is notable for being the first green bloomer introduced to both the Thai market and the United States. According to a reputable source, Ek Wilai garnered first place in a prestigious flower competition in Thailand and was subsequently purchased by a collector for one million Thai Baht. This cultivar is quite historic, having been developed in the late 1990s, possibly earlier, by a breeder from Phuket, a southern province of Thailand. The cultivar’s name is a tribute to the breeder’s wife, Wilai. Despite its significance, there remain very few green cultivars with exceptional qualities that are currently available for sale in either Thailand or the United States.
