Today, I’m starting a master list of Thai cultivars to help serious collectors understand the meanings behind the names of these amazing Crown of Thorns varieties. There are tons of them out there, so I’ll try to post regularly and keep up with the fast-paced distribution of new releases—no small feat!
The first entry is called PORN KANCHANA. You won’t find it under that spelling in my catalog, but you will find Pohn Kanchana—with an “H” instead of an “R.” Why? A few years ago, online selling platforms were extremely strict about certain words, and their algorithms would automatically ban them. When I tried to list this pastel-pink beauty, Shopify refused. It took me a while to figure out why. There was no AI sidekick back then; otherwise, I might have discovered much sooner that Shopify’s algorithm was not a fan of the word “porn.”
Apparently, even a Crown of Thorns can get caught in the internet’s briar patch.

It sounds crazy to western ears, but yes! It is one of the most common and beloved words in the Thai language.
The word "Porn" (พร) comes from ancient Pali/Sanskrit roots and means "a divine blessing," "a prayer," or "a gift from the gods."
Because the meaning is so beautiful, millions of Thai women have "Porn" as part of their actual legal first name (like Pornthip, Pornpailin, or Kanchana-porn). In Thailand, it evokes feelings of grace, luck, and holiness.
Of course, when those names are translated phonetically into English letters, it creates some hilarious culture shocks!
